Honoring Military Experience: UIW Awarded Second College Credit for Heroes Grant

UIW Awarded Phase II Funding Through Texas Workforce Commission College Credit for Heroes Program

The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce that it has been awarded Phase II funding through the Texas Workforce Commission's (TWC) College Credit for Heroes (CCH) program. The $200,000 grant, which runs from 2026 to 2028, will enable UIW to continue expanding opportunities for service members, veterans and military-connected students to receive academic credit for their military training and experience. This new phase will grow the initiative even further at UIW through workshops, campus events and enhanced outreach to the military community.

The College Credit for Heroes initiative helps veterans and active-duty service members transition more efficiently into higher education and the civilian workforce by recognizing the valuable knowledge and skills gained through military service. Through this second phase of funding, UIW will continue to strengthen pathways that reduce barriers to degree completion and accelerate career advancement for military-affiliated students.

As a military-friendly institution with a long-standing commitment to serving the military community, UIW remains dedicated to helping students maximize earned credits, shorten time to degree completion, and achieve their educational and professional goals. The Phase II award reflects confidence in UIW's successful implementation of the program, and its continued efforts to support military learners throughout their academic journey. This funding will further enhance services and initiatives that honor the experiences of those who have served while creating new opportunities for academic and workforce success.

About College Credit for Heroes

College Credit for Heroes is a partnership between the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) and Texas colleges and universities. The program seeks to maximize the college credit awarded to veterans and service members for their military experience, enabling an easier transition into the workforce. Each participating institution retains the right to determine how credits apply to specific degrees and certificates. It is estimated that there are currently 1.5 million veterans and transitioning active-duty service members in Texas.

Flexible Learning at UIW

The UIW School of Professional Studies (SPS) offers flexible learning options with 100% online or in-person 4-week terms (Winter and Summer) and 8-week terms (Spring, Summer and Fall). SPS active-duty students receive free textbooks and pay no academic fees, while veterans, military members, National Guard, Reservists and dependents enjoy special rates. UIW's personalized advising, online tutoring and military-focused degrees are designed to help you complete your degree faster. Your Service. Your Future. Our Mission.

Get Started

Service members can request a preliminary evaluation of their military credits before applying to UIW by emailing CC4H@uiwtx.edu. This unofficial assessment typically takes approximately 2 weeks and serves as a general guideline. Final credit articulation will be determined through an official review by the UIW Registrar's office upon admission.

Students must ensure their official transcripts from all previously attended institutions are received by UIW within the first eight weeks of enrollment to ensure timely processing. Joint Services Transcripts (JSTs) may be requested by UIW as long as the student has granted permission on the application to UIW.

UIW is honored to partner with the Texas Workforce Commission in advancing educational access and workforce readiness for Texas veterans and service members. For more information, please email CC4H@uiwtx.edu.
