DoD SkillBridge Program
UIW is proud to be a trusted DoD SkillBridge partner, welcoming Servicemembers into our schools and departments to contribute their talent and expertise. Through this dynamic partnership, Servicemembers make a meaningful impact at UIW while gaining valuable, real-world civilian experience that prepares them for successful careers beyond military service.

Each year approximately 200,000 members of the U.S. Armed Forces, stationed in over 140 military installations in the U.S. and overseas, will leave active duty and re-enter the civilian workforce or pursue higher education.
Through the SkillBridge program industry partners benefit from gaining early access to the extensive experience, skills and unmatched work ethos service members bring to the workforce. Employers craft SkillBridge programs to meet their specific workforce needs, matching those needs to the skills and abilities of highly motivated Service members, all at no cost.
The DoD SkillBridge Program offers active-duty Servicemembers a unique opportunity to gain meaningful civilian work experience during the final 180 days of their service. Program participation typically ranges from 90 to 180 days, with the duration tailored through collaboration between the Servicemember’s military supervisor and the UIW internship supervisor.
At UIW, we prioritize candidates who can commit to the full 180-day experience, maximizing professional development and impact, while remaining flexible to accommodate veterans’ appointments and transition requirements before separation.
If you are interested in completing the program at UIW, please email Priscila Fiala, Assistant Director of Military Programs, at pfiala@uiwtx.edu to indicate your area of interest within the university. This information will help guide you through the next steps in the process.
We also ask that you complete our questionnaire as part of the application process. While we do our best to place all prospective Servicemembers, placement is not guaranteed. To ensure a high-quality SkillBridge experience, UIW maintains a limited number of participants at any given time.
In accordance with the UIW DoD Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), applicants must be able to commit to a minimum of 90 days. Please note that the onboarding and approval process may take several weeks to complete before a prospective participant can begin the program.
Your responses will help us better understand your goals and tailor opportunities to support a successful and meaningful SkillBridge experience.
