CLOSE CALL FOR TOURNAMENT WINNERS -- posted Wednesday, October 11 2006
It was a close finish in the 2nd annual UIW Athletic Hall of Fame / Celebrity Golf Classic with the top team a definite winner and a scorecard playoff necessary for second and third.

Topping the field with a net score of 53 (72 par) was the group of Todd Anderson, Jesse Cox, Rick Voltz, Mike Fannuzi, and their celebrity player UIW baseball Coach Danny Heep.

Right on their heels were two groups which finished at 54 each. The scorecard countdown pointed the winning finger at the group of Derek Woodruff, Richard Wager, Jadon Mehra, and Matt Vela.

With the scorecard deal benefiting the Woodruff team, third place went to the group of Burt Powell, Brent Powell, Jeff Powell and their celebrity golfer UIW Hall of Fame member Jenny Carnes, Class of 2005.

The tournament with its Florida scramble format was played at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort and was co-chaired by former Spurs great Mike Mitchell and by Amazin’ Mets world series winner Jerry Grote.

The tournament had its moments. There were great shots, and there were good shots, and there was the moment when one player lofted his putt and hit a teammate in the stomach.

And there was the moment when a golfer hit a second shot low, it hit a cart path marker and rebounded straight backwards to be caught one-handed by the golfer who hit it in the first place.
